Dunne Academy may not have a big enrolment, but its student body has a lot of spirit as evidenced at the recent Harvest Run held in Carbonear. Among Dunne’s running team who took part in the races are, from left: Claire Ryan (placed eleventh in grade six level), Kaine Tobin (placed seventh in Grade five level), Megan Squires (placed first in Grade 11 level), Savannah Hynes (placed tenth in Grade seven level), Heather Squires (placed twelfth in Grade seven level) and coach Karen Hearn. Students from Dunne Memorial Academy were in Carbonear Oct. 10 for the annual Harvest Run, joining 1,100 students representing 32 schools across the province.

There were six students participating, a good showing from a school with an enrollment of less than 100.

“I am so proud of all competitors; excellent results from a small school,” said teaching and running coach Karen Hearn.

Hearn, with the help of high school students Katie Burke and Megan Squires, who placed first in the high school girls’ category, runs a cross country running group for Kindergarten to Grade six students during lunch.

“They have a choice to walk, jog or run as part of the intramural program. I do encourage running but either one is great for a healthy mind and a healthy body,” said Hearn.

For the Harvest Run, students ran a set distance established by their grade category; Special Olympians ran 400 metres, students up to and including Grade five ran 1,200 m (or, 1.2 km), students in Grade six ran 1,500 m (or, 1.5 km) junior high students ran 2,200 m (2.2 km) and high school girls ran 3,000 m (3 km) while boys ran 5,000 m (5 km).

Students from Grade three up to Grade 11 competed in the run, which is in it’s seventeenth year.
