The Witless Bay Volunteer Fire Department recently named Chrystal Kelly it’s first ever female Captain.
Kelly said the promotion is a little daunting, but she feels up to the task.
“I’ve been pretty dedicated to the fire department for the last 17 years, and I’m really looking forward to the challenge,” said Kelly. “So, I’m excited.”
Kelly said volunteering with the department affords her the opportunity to help people when they need it most.
“If I can give someone a little bit of comfort, that’s where my heart is,” said Kelly. “I love helping people, I love being able to have the opportunity to help people. And that can be anything from doing CPR to holding their hand.”
Kelly joined the department after witnessing an incident not far from her home.
“I was watching a call, people were responding to an accident, and I just felt that I wanted to be one of those people who were there to help,” said Kelly. “And so, I walked up one day and decided to volunteer. And I really haven’t looked back. It’s been 17 years, and I’ve seen a lot. I can’t say I’ve seen it all, but I’ve seen a fair bit. And it’s hard. There are some calls that have been really hard, but to me its all worthwhile. I haven’t regretted it for a second.”
Despite the challenges and hardships, she recommends anybody who’s given thought to joining submit an application during the next recruitment drive.
“The fact that you’re thinking about joining is enough,” said Kelly. “There are so many jobs, there’s so many things you can do. It’s a great way to give back to your community. And its great socially. You make so many friends… If you’re thinking about it, come on up and give it a try. It’s not for everyone, but no one who has come up yet has left unless it’s for a job and they’ve moved out of the community. We’re like a family.”
The department has a track record of women in leadership roles — in 2022 Maria Churchill was named the department’s first ever paid fire chief, male or female.
